Age: well, he looks around 18, but he’s probably at least 32, he looked around the same age those 16 years past. It’s quite possible that once they hit roughly 18, the Leafé Knights stop aging physically—a property of living in Leafenia and having such a deep connection to Leafé—the life source. Gender: Male Sexuality: straight—He loves Himeno, but he won’t communicate that to her outright. Appearance: Most people would call Hayate handsome, or at least most girls would. His eyes are moderately narrow and deep blue. His dark blue-black hair is long, falling at just about mid-back, and his bangs fall over his face, occasionally obscuring his eyes from view. Two strands fall consistently before his ears. When he isn’t being too active, the last six inches of his hair are held together in the back with the silver band that marks him as a Leafé Knight (it often slips down to three inches if he’s fighting on foot or the wind is strong). We first see him wearing a casual outfit consisting of an open white trenchcoat, over a navy polo shirt and light blue jeans. When he works for Kaoru, Himeno’s father, he wears a light blue jumpsuit with an orange patch on the upper left arm. As a Leafé Knight, his outfit consists of navy blue breeches and white boots that go up to his knees. Over that is a skirt-like overlay, with a loose sash of white that resembles a belt and scabbard without a sword in it. His jacket seals in the front where a blue wing emblem is. It has red shoulder pads and a tall red collar, which is over a navy shirt. The whole jacket and skirt is trimmed around the edges with gold. Personality: On the surface, Hayate seems like an ass. He’s the kind of person most would say, “could never smile.” He is cool, collected, and cruel. He broods quite a bit, as well, and seems unhappy. He's extraordinarily blunt and will only yell when something's wrong. He is quick to call Himeno an idiot and other names (the most common being, ‘Tulip-Head’). He wants to work by himself. He is also very kind, gentle, and generous. He only wants the best for people. He is the unannounced leader of the Leafé Knights and as such, likely wants to make sure everyone is safe, although sometimes his fear directs him into an unsafe realm. For example, his original refusal to find the Prétear could have lead the to the disbanding and fading of all the Leafé Knights, although he was saying it because he was afraid of creating another Princess of Disaster. He nearly kills Himeno by tracing Fenrir to the church where she became what she is at this time, although it was out of his desire to protect Himeno that he did it. Abilities/Weaponry: As a Leafé Knight, Hayate can know the presence of weak demon larvae, and transport demons, as well as the Princess of Disaster. He and the other Knights use the Road of Light to travel to Leafenia, as well. As the unannounced leader of the Knights of Leafenia, he can call the other Knights using the power residing in the Spring of Leafé in Leafenia. When the Prétear is present, he can also notice her, since she has a very strong reaction to contact with the Leafé Knights’ hands. In addition, when there is a demon larva, he will immediately travel/teleport on the wind to that location. As the Leafé Knight of Wind, Hayate controls the power of the wind. Alone, he can put things to sleep with a lulling breeze of wind, create a sharp gust of wind in various shapes as an attack, and manipulate the wind to glide on a breeze to end up near demon larvae and transport demons quickly. When he préts (fuses his leafé or soul) with Himeno to become the Wind Prétear, he becomes her shield as well as the Wind Sword. Edit: He can bring up the shield that he uses for the Prétear on himself when he's attacked himself, HOWEVER, the shield merely lessens the effect of an attack--it does not prevent the attack or prevent it from hurting himself; it merely makes it so it is not as lethal, depending on how strong said attack is and how long he can keep said shield up. Weaknesses: His main weakness is his inability to forgive himself for the past. It is the root of all the trouble that goes on with his own emotions and his fearful brooding. His uneasy rejection of finding the Prétear stems from the mistake he made long ago in hurting Takako’s feelings and making her the Princess of Disaster and his fear that he will repeat it. His fear also causes a lot of trouble for Himeno (see personality again for details on that). Edit: All Leafé Knights have a strong sense of their energy reserves. If a Leafé Knight has used up too much of his Leafé or his Leafé has been drained much too deeply by Fenrir, and it is so low that it does not adequately support his own body, and the Knight will fade. (Much like it's been said of Nobodies, Lumens, and even Paixaoan citizens: After lying for a moment injured and then dead, the body of a Leafé Knight fades away with his energy, disintegrating into the Leafé that has fueled them and returning to the Leafé in Leafenia until their successor will take on their Leafé.) History: (This is really complicated because much of Hayate’s story is linked inextricably with Takako/Fenrir’s story and also Himeno’s story.) Sixteen years ago, Takako was sitting on a bench reading a book, when she was approached by the Leafé Knights to save the world from the Princess of Disaster. She fought by their side, but at the same time, fought a demon in her heart known as fear. She would cry and have breakdowns, but Hayate, the Knight of Wind, would be kind to her and offer her support, while Sasame watched silently. Slowly, she would get stronger and braver, no longer seeming scared. Hayate was sympathetic to her deep emotions at that time. He didn’t realize how much his sympathy and kindness would have misled her. At that time, Hayate also had a radiant smile once in awhile. In the end of those sixteen years ago, when she saved the world and watched a marriage at the church, she admitted her love to Hayate and he rejected her, because he could not return her feelings. She continued at it telling him she only wanted him, and she fought for him alone. He still rejected her, and she cried inside the church. That was when she turned into Fenrir, the Princess of Disaster, tossing away the very Knights she was sworn to protect the world with. Fenrir is a demon, who was once a Prétear. When a Prétear's emotions turn to the negative as Takako's did, they turn into Princesses of Disaster. Hayate feels his rejection of Takako because he did not love her is his deepest sin. He feels that it was all his own fault. He has never forgiven himself for it, and in fact, still blames himself for causing Takako, the former Prétear so much pain. The Princess of Disaster was sealed away in Leafenia. Three Knights gave all their Leafé to imprison her and faded, which explains why in the current day; three of the Leafé Knights (Mannen the Leafé Knight of Ice, Hajime the Leafé Knight of Water, and Shin the Leafé Knight of Plants) are only children. Until, one day, she freed herself from her prison and sent a red snow of evil down upon Awayuki Town, Japan. Demon larvae are spread throughout the city and the Leafé Knights are forced to search for the Prétear—the one who will turn the red snow white. Hayate finds Himeno, who is the Prétear; even though he vowed that, they do not need a Prétear out of his fear of repeating his mistake with Takako, the last Prétear. Takako wants revenge on Hayate for sixteen years ago, and also wants to kill Himeno, feeling she is only a stupid woman and not good enough to be Prétear. She can control Demon Larvae and create them. Hayate, in response to Takako’s wish for revenge and her will to kill Himeno, increases his overprotectiveness to Himeno. He guards her day and night, becoming an assistant to her father. He continually still yells at her that she is an idiot and needs to act rather than stand like a lame duck. However, his protection of her increases tenfold by the end of the series. Close to the end, Sasame admits how much he loved Takako, and how he always watched her, hoping she would love him in return. He offers to join her side, if she cannot become good again. At first, she rejects by wounding him and disappearing, then Sasame finds her again and Takako tells him that if he truly loves her, he will kill Hayate. He accepts, and the two Knights fight. Nevertheless, Takako changes her mind and takes Sasame anyway, and he becomes her loyal Knight of Darkness, with Hayate still alive. Hayate is, along with the other knights, furious that Sasame would betray them for Takako, the one they are supposed to be fighting. After all, a Leafé Knight is not supposed to have feelings for the Princess of Disaster. Himeno says she does not think someone should be told it is wrong to fall in love, even if it is with the wrong person. She admits that love is one of the emotions that cannot be controlled by logic. Hayate seems to consider this and likely understand it, in spite of the fact that he is still angry with Sasame. However, he admits nothing, even though his love for Himeno continues to grow. Hayate is also furious that Sasame would bring Takako to Leafenia just to fight him. They are also distraught because, as Sasame is given a gift as the Knight of Darkness, all the Leafé in Leafenia is sucked dry except for the circular patch Himeno, Hayate, Go, Kei, Mannen, Shin, and Hajime were on. Fenrir later also uses Mawata as her Puppet of Darkness for power and energy, using her self-depression against her. At the end, Hayate fights once more with Knight of Darkness Sasame, undoing his prét with Himeno, saying he needs her to be alive so he can come back and tell her something important. A bit later, he sacrifices most of his Leafé to be a shield for Himeno when they prét as the Wind Prétear after Sasame dies and Takako is taken into the Great Tree of Fenrir because she is engulfed in despair. However, after he sacrifices all that, Himeno vows to protect the world with everyone there and becomes the Legendary White Prétear all by herself, forgiving and healing them all and the world by giving all her Leafé. She resurrects Sasame to be with the now once-again-human, Takako. She heals and forgives Hayate for his mistake sixteen years ago. She heals all she can by giving away the power she has in her. Hayate looks down at her prone form as the White Prétear on a bed of Leafenia flowers and crystals and shortly after Kei says they should all pay their respects, Hayate bows his head and fulfills his promise to her on the Great Tree of Fenrir that he had something important to say. He kisses her and reflects on a wish that he wants to see her smile once more. At that, Himeno is reborn—brought back to life. The story says, because "love is a miracle." The Leafé Knights return to the now-healed Leafenia, Takako and Sasame are together whenever they can be, and Himeno returns to her family on the estate. Her father writes novels once again and Hayate, Shin, Mannen, and Hajime, come back to visit Himeno and her family frequently. However, Hayate still won’t outright admit his love for Himeno. He blushes and tries to pull away when she tries to cling to him. And, when she tells him she’s getting better with the kendama he gave her to test her concentration skills a while back, he insists that she throw it away, even after she says she doesn’t want to throw it out.
